15 stories ... 12/23/2008

Hello everyone.

Just to let you know, I plan on taking Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off.  I just will be busy with work and things with the holiday.  I will resume publishing Friday evening.  I wish you all the best and season's greetings.

Here is this evening's 15:

1) In a horrible story of being stranded, a train from Chicago in-route to Seattle was not moving for close to 24 hours.  This unbelievable tale from KMSP-TV Minneapolis, MN.

2) President-elect Barack Obama attended a memorial service for his deceased grandmother.  "Toots" helped raised him and help molded his life in his early years.  She passed away just days before the historic presidential election.  Story and details from KWES-TV Odessa, TX.

3) There has been talk in the past few months that MSNBC's Chris Matthews might run for the senate seat in PA, competing against long time PA Senator Alren Specter.  Since he has been on the fence for some time, some are now saying that he needs to make up his mind.  Details from The Patriot-News - Harrisburg, PA.

4) In a good way of showing smart travels, the NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkaway will over free coffee and drinks to travelers this Christmas and New Year's Eve.  Story from Home News Tribune - East Brunswick, NJ.

5) Kind of an update on a story I brought to you online last night.  Michael Jackson is still denying reports that there are rumors that he is fighting lung disease.  Details from KABC-TV Los Angeles, CA.

6) Mr. Bush pardoned 19 people today.  He did this today as one of his last acts in office as president.  Story from KXXV-TV Weslaco, TX.

7) President-Elect Barack Obama was offered to use Abraham Lincoln's bible to be sword into office in a few weeks.  Humbled, he accepted the offer.  Details from WCPO-TV Cincinnati, OH.  My question is .... who says you have to use a bible?

8) Some people like to say "Sure, I will try to hit the gym" for the new year.  Been there, done that right?  Well, in New York, some Gold's Gym is giving away free advice and workouts for the New Year.  Story from WRGB-TV Schnectady, NY.

9) In a good story here, looks like numerous Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and his wife are going to be expecting a baby in 2009.  Details from CNN.COM.

10) We all heard the famous saying 'Another man's trash is another man's treasure'.  I guess the same could be applied to this.  Someone bought a smashed guitar once played by Kurt Cobain for $100,000.  Story from Seattle Post-Intelligencer - Seattle, WA.

11) The Washington Post and The Baltimore Sun have agreed to share content and photos.  Details from WTTG-TV Washington, DC.

12) A week or two ago, I brought you a story that Starbuck's customers 'pay it forward' for about 20 customers.  Well here is a tale of another one.  This time, WTVF-TV in Nashville, TN reports that this happened non-stop for 5 hours!

13) Your 'stupid comment' story of the day comes from Bakersfield, CA.  Looks like UPS is apologizing after a UPS driver wrote a bad comment on a delivery slip.

14) In a really good story, there are weird rules with everything in life.  And even in the NFL.  And sometimes, it confuses everybody.  Story from Abilene Reporter-News - Abilene, TX.

15) And finally ... looks like missing sleep is bad to your health.  Not only in loss of energy, but as a new study suggests, it might be bad for your arteries.  Story from BBC News.

One final thing before I close shop tonight.   Last evening I told you that the Hershey Chronicle is one of the midstate weekly newspapers that might cease operation by the end of the year.  Well, looks like the Hummelstown Sun will purchase the paper.  Good news.  Now, someone just save the E-Town Chronicle and Columbia Ledger and well will be in even better shape.  I have always loved newspapers and losing these great weekly papers will be bad for this area.

Have a great Christmas and I might post some stories Christmas, but don't be surprised if I don't.

-- Matt
